Wild Edible Plants

Wild Edible Plants
by Grower John

There are literally thousands of edible wild plants around the world. This page only touches on about 90 of them. All the plants listed here can be found growing in Florida, some of the ones listed can be found in the Southeastern U.S. and in other places across the North American continent.

Each of the plants listed are linked to videos on Green Deane’s EatTheWeeds youtube channel. The list is alphabetized by each plant’s common name, not its scientific name. Before you try to use or eat any plant you should consult a local plant expert in your area. You will find a similar warning in the beginning of each of Green Deane’s videos.

A great resource for people who are looking to learn more about plants is the North American Native Plant Society. This organization has chapters in all 50 states. Most chapters hold monthly meetings and do presentations on local plants, some of them do events such as plant walks and host workshops. You can find out more about the organization by clicking here.

If you’re looking for a great reference book on the plant kingdom and botany in general I would strongly recommend you purchase the book Botany in a Day by Thomas Elpel. The book does an excellent job explaining basic botany as well as the hierarchy of the plant kingdom. The more you know about botany the easier it will be for you to identify plants.
